This project is a student project at the School of Design or a research project at the School of Design. This project is not commercial and serves educational purposes

One of the materials of the ICU’s «Lesson» educational project was a lecture on editing thinking, which is an important tool not only for the director but also for the researcher.

Who’s thinking editing? Anyone who tells a story and tells a story on behalf of a character, or takes an abstract (comprehensive) authorial position. The VCR, the poet, the writer of the comic book, the director, the scientist — every storyteller moves from private to global and back, as from a big plan to a common one, performing «squeaks» between images or ideas.

As early as the 1910s, filmmakers learned how to make «glazed» stickers that the audience doesn’t even notice because they accurately reflect the movement of his thoughts on the canvae of the story. In the form of a question-and-answer, the images replace each other, revealing to us the course of history. In the same way, a «slatted» narrative text or a logical scheme works.

Another installation option, however, would be a visual or narrative leap, a sharp clash of plans or images. Sergei Eisenstein, one of the main theorists of 20th-century editing, pointed out how brilliant this is in haiku.

Ah, don’t stom the grass! There were fireflies blazing at night last night. (Issa)

The same path is followed by video artists exploring the possibilities of audio-visual perception and visual experience. They try to show that, as Eisenstein said, the idea of almost any level of complexity can be expressed through successive images. And rather, it’s to convey a sense of any degree of depth.
